Curtis was born in Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia her parents were Carmencita Ojales a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan and James Ernest Curtis Smith, an Australian lawyer. Her father was engaged to Ojales in 1982. Her younger sister, who is also an actor was her father. The father of the couple had a half sister called Clare, who passed away in 2007 at the age of just four months, due to a heart disease.
